PROTECTION FOR LAID-UP SHIPS
To combat the problem of blockage of seawater systems by marine growth while ships are laid up, the Underwater Maintenance Co. <of Chandlers Ford, Hampshire> introduced two years ago a system of sealing the sea inlets and discharges with plastic blanks incorporating a dosing pot' that releases a biocide <it can also include a rust inhibitor>. The effectiveness of the system was demonstrated during the recent reactivation, of a Shell ULCC laid up in Lock Striven; divers removing the blanks found all but one of the sea chests and gratings bright and clear of growth, the exception being a small overboard discharge which had been overlooked when the blanks were fitted and had become choked solid. Also, two unprotected ships laid up nearby for a similar period were found to have their inlets choked with soft fouling.
