ICE TECHNOLOGICAL EXPEDITION WITH RV POLARSTERN TO SPITZBERGEN
The second ice technological expedition with the German polar research vessel Polarstern was performed during May 1985 in the Van Mijen Fjord, Spitzbergen and off Northern Spitzbergen. This expedition was carried out to complement the data acquired during the 1984 expedition off the coast of Labrador, Canada. The following main topics were investigated: the icebreaking capabilities of the Polarstern, determination of ice loads on the ship's structure, frictional resistance from ice, manoeuvrability in ice and physical properties of sea ice. Concerning the icebreaking capability, good agreement was found between the predictions based on tank tests and full scale measurements. Due to the severe ice conditions encountered this year, impact loads from hard multi-year ice floes nearly reached the design load particularly when the ship was able to increase her speed in open leads before a further ice contact. Measurements of the frictional forces showed a decreasing tendency of the frictional coefficient with the increase of the impact load. <CMO>.
