SHALLOW RIVER PUSHBOAT PRELIMINARY DESIGN

A preliminary design of a river pushboat is presented which consists of i> estimation of pushboat push'; ii> estimation of barge tow resistance; iii> selection of pushboat horsepower based on equilibrium speed from equating i> and ii>; and iv> determination of the pushboat dimensions and tunnel stern arrangement from the horsepower obtained in iii>. A review of guidelines for estimating the pushboat length, propeller diameter, and tunnel stern arrangement are given as well as criteria for insuring adequate tunnel inflow and outflow.
