FOREIGN TRADE 74: THE PORT OF NEW YORK & NEW JERSEY

This analysis of the Port's position in the handling of oceanborne and airborne foreign trade, presents statistics on the various aspects of trade which provide a framework for evaluating the Port's role in international commerce. The foreign trade volume in 1974 was 16,734,773 long tons. The oceanborne bulk cargoes dropped 20.3 percent (from 1973 values) in 1974 to 47,210,555 long tons, and airborne volumes increased 6.5 percent to 497,994 long tons. Statistics for general cargo, bulk cargo, and world distribution of the cargo are tabulated. The chairmans statement, also included here, briefly describes recent improvement programs, discusses trade information services, and comments on planning and development for the future.
