CELLULARITY: AN ADVANCED WEAPON ELECTRONICS INTEGRATION TECHNIQUE

The paper describes Cellularity, an advanced weapon integration technique for warships. The technique is based upon two standards which are principally concerned with ensuring the compatibility of the physical interfaces between ships and the weapons equipment which they accommodate. The Ministry of Defence has recently adopted these standards which define a Transport Envelope and an Installation Envelope. These prescribe limiting dimensions on the size of equipment and ensure that any equipment within the maximum dimensions can be accommodated, by the ship's access routes and compartments. Shipbuilding and design problems which are reduced by this technique are described with the subsequent benefits in shipbuilding, in effectiveness and to subsequent updating. Parallels are also drawn with related techniques. The paper outlines the development of the standards, their verification and the associated work which has allowed the first, partial implementation to be approved for the Type 23 frigate.
