NAVAL SHIP DESIGN IMPLICATIONS OF THE COLLECTIVE PROTECTION SYSTEM

Future US Navy ships are to have a Collective Protection System, comparable to the British CITADEL or the West German DSK system, for protection against nuclear, chemical, and biological warfare. The adoption of such a system will affect ship design, especially the heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems. It will change the usual damage control procedures, and other routine and emergency ship evolutions, and will also affect the crew's way of living and working. All these factors are discussed.
