STRENGTH TEST ON AN ACTUAL SWATH SHIP
Because of the importance of weight-reduction in SWATH ships to enable them to attain higher speeds, a special novel form of structure was adopted for the main hull. The skin plates used were so thin as to only just withstand the lateral pressure, but to compensate for this the main supports were constructed of I-section plate-girders. Bending tests proved the feasibility of the concept.
