LATERAL RESPONSE OF A PILE NEAR A CUT OR A SLOPE
A theoretical analysis is made of the effect of a slope or cut on the load-deflection behaviour to failure of a single laterally loaded pile in clay. This analysis utilizes elastic theory but allows for yield of the soil. The results of the analysis are presented as a series of correction factors to previously-obtained solutions for a pile in A soil with no cut or slope. These solutions show that the effect of the cut or slope is only significant if the pile is closer than about four pile diameters away, and that the effect of the depth of the slope is most significant for relatively stiff piles. The direction of loading does not effect deflections within the elastic range but does significantly affect the ultimate load, and hence the load-deflection behaviour, after yielding of the soil occurs. The results of a series of model pile tests confirm most of the above theoretical trends and show reasonable agreement with values of deflection and ultimate load calculated from the theory.
