ANALYSIS OF CREEP SETTLEMENT OF PILE FOUNDATIONS

The problem of the settlement of a pile in a soil exhibiting creep properties is analysed by converting the visco-elastic problem to an equivalent elastic problem by means of A LaPlace transform. The solution is then found in LaPlace transform space in the form of an Eigen-value expansion and transformed back to obtain a numerical solution to the original problem. This form of solution enables any viscoelastic soil model to be considered. Some typical solutions are presented for the settlement and base load transfer in a pile for two types of creep response, A terminating creep represented by a linear visco-elastic model and a non-terminating creep in which creep strain is A linear function of log time. For the latter case, which represents the observed creep behaviour of many real soils, the stress and load distribution in the pile tend to those for a rigid pile in an elastic material. This fact leads to a simple expression for the logarithmic creep settlement rate of the pile. (A) /TRRL/
