THE USE OF A TEST OF DRIVING KNOWLEDGE AND DRIVING PRACTICES AS CRITERIA FOR EVALUATING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF DRIVER EDUCATION
The purpose of this study is to determine the feasibility of using a written test to measure driving knowledge some time after learning to drive and thus to evaluate driver education. The pattern of interaction with the car is taken into account. The objectives of driver education are discussed and the purpose of evaluation and its criteria. The implication of the quasi-experimental design and data collection methods are considered. Data are then presented relating to the reliability of the test, the retention of formal knowledge and the relationship between knowledge and experience. Driving practices and pattern of car usage are examined in detail. The relationship between car availability, socio-economic status and driving practices is then discussed. The study concludes that there is A relationship between knowledge and driving proficiency but no evidence exists that knowledge is modified by experience subsequent to taking the test. /TRRL/
