HYDRODYNAMIC FORCE ACTING ON A HULL IN MANOEUVRING MOTION

Mathematical models constructed from hydrodynamic characteristics of a ship are generally used to simulate the manoeuvring motion. The lateral force and yaw moment acting on a hull, which were the main parameters in the mathematical model, were calculated by a theoretical method. This method was originally proposed by Fuwa, but in the present paper has been simplified for practical use. An empirical equation was elaborated from the results on eight ships. Captive model tests were also carried out using segmented models to obtain longitudinal distribution of lateral forces. The calculation method was verified by comparison with experimental results.
