NEW ROLES FOR SELF-UNLOADING SHIPS
Expanding applications of, and new roles for, self-unloading ships are outstanding examples of the evolution of maritime transportation. Self-unloaders were developed on the Great Lakes in response to two significant factors; the short voyages inherent in Lakes trading and the relative importance of time in port and, therefore, ship-to-shore handling. The latest stage in this development is the application of this technology to coastal and ocean trades. This paper is divided into sections dealing with misconceptions; capabilities; the 'true benefit'; two examples of the application of self-unloaders to take advantage of the 'true benefit'; and evaluating the economic advantages.
