THE EFFECT OF BENTONITE ON THE SKIN FRICTION IN CAST-IN-PLACE PILES AND DIAPHRAGM WALLS
Bentonite, a colloidal clay of volcanic origin, has been used since about 1958 to support the sides of excavations for cast-in-situ piles or retaining walls. This paper outlines an investigation into the existence of a filter cake of bentonite between the concrete and the soil subsequent to concreting. On two construction sites in Durban the filter cake was found to be of a substantial thickness. A laboratory investigation into the filtration characteristics of a bentonite slurry was also performed. The effects of pressure load, permeability of the subsoil and time on the rates of formation of the filter cake have been studied in detail. It is possible that the bentonite filter cake has a high strength. /Author/TRRL/
