(LADY SUSAN AND LADY STEPHANIE) A PAIR OF FIREFIGHTING LADIES FROM PORTUGAL
The powerful firefighting tractor tugs Lady Susan and Lady Stephanie, designed by Cochrane Shipbuilders <of Selby> for Humber Tugs Ltd and built in Portugal at the Argibay yard, were delivered in April and June 1984. They are available for giving tug assistance to very large vessels in the Hull and Immingham vicinity, and for oil dispersal, towing, salvage and emergency services in the Humber estuary and adjacent sea area. Propulsion is provided by two Ruston RKCM six- cylinder engines <of opposite directions of rotation> each developing 985 kW at 750 rpm and each geared to drive a Voith Schneider propeller at 70 rpm; the two main <Worthington Simpson> fire pumps are driven at 1800 rpm off the free end of the engines. Each main fire pump has a capacity of 1200 cum/hr at a head of 135m <i.e., over a tonne of water every 3 seconds>, and supplies a Svenska Skum monitor; other firefighting equipment includes two foam monitors and, on deck, three four-way manifolds. The article, which describes the tugs and in particular their firefighting systems, includes general- arrangement drawings. Principal particulars of the vessels are:- Length 30m o.a., 28.3m b.p.; mld. breadth 9.2m; depth 3.8m; mean draught 2.6m, extreme draught 4.4m; 106 dwt; speed 12 knots; static bollard pull 28 t; accommodation for 2 officers and 4 other crew.
