SIDE-LOADING ARRANGEMENTS IN THE CARGO SHIPS GOLF, BREMER HANDEL AND LYSEKIL

The Author <of Deutsche MacGregor GmbH> describes a type of side-loading installation, supplied by his company, for handling palletised and paper-roll cargoes. For loading, the cargo is brought aboard from the quayside by fork-lift trucks; watertight doors in the ship's side are used as ramps <adjustable for height> for the trucks. These trucks set the cargo down on to a lift platform <there are two lifts in each installation>, and the lift takes the cargo to the required deck for stowage by fork-lift trucks operating in the ship. The article gives general information on this MacGregor equipment, together with more detailed information on the particular installations in three ships. These include the 3142-dwt Golf, a new <1981> ship which needs to go under low bridges and whose side-loading gear is adapted to provide the necessary clearance <there are no fixed towers as in the other ships>. The other two installations are in the converted ships Bremer Handel <1350 dwt> and Lysekil <1575 dwt>; the installation in the latter ship is contained in a new 15-m long midship section.
