CHARLES H. CATES II
This berthing tug, built in British Columbia by Allied Shipbuilders Ltd, was delivered to C. H. Cates & Sons in Oct. 1983 for work in Port of Vancouver, where she will specialise in handling ships of 25,000 grt and above. Designed by Robert Allan Ltd, she is believed to be the most powerful tug of this size in the world; two or three tugs of this type should be able to handle ships that would require 10 or 12 conventional tugs. The new tug has several innovative features that include propulsion by two Niigata Z-drive propulsion units mounted side-by-side, under the hull and encased in nozzles, at about 70% L from the bow. Under joystick control from the wheelhouse, the units can be turned through 360 deg.; no other steering or reversing gear is fitted, and almost full power is available at any angle and when going astern. The units are driven by two 1200-bhp General Motors 16V149T engines, through gearing and line shafts. The article, which includes general-arrangement drawings and an equipment list, briefly describes the tug. Principal particulars are: length 73.67 ft o.a.; mld. breadth 28 ft; mld. depth 11.25 ft; draught 12 ft; top speed 11.67 knots ahead, 10.68 kn astern; bollard pull 86,000 lb ahead, 72,500 lb astern; two-man crew.
