BARGE MOTION PREDICTIONS
Prediction of near-future barge-motions, in particular those of derrick and other barges in offshore construction operations, can be extremely important. After a consideration of analytical motion- prediction, a new approach is here described in which the barge itself is used as the wave gauge. The validity of this method has been studied analytically, including the analysis of experimental data obtained from a 122-m barge, equipped with a 1440/1800-tonne revolving crane, while on tow between different sites in the Gulf of Mexico; these studies were aimed at ascertainign whether acceptable accuracy could be obtained in predicting motions of a construction barge at a given heading using only the motions determined on a different heading. This work, carried out by the author and associates with the support of Brown & Root Inc., is described and the results, which are encouraging, are presented and discussed. It is mentioned that, with an on-board computer, the possibilities for predicting, optimising the heading and loading, and simulating critical operations before the barge is committed, are limitless.
