POPOV'S FREQUENCY DOMAIN STABILITY CRITERIA AND STABILITY OF LARGE AMPLITUDE ROLLING MOTION

In this paper Popov's frequency domain method is introduced as an alternative application of the Lyapunov direct method and conditions for stability of the large amplitude rolling motion are derived. Due to their relatively simple algebraic form the results are simpler to interpret and easier to apply. In the derivation of the stability criteria, equivalence of two different types of roll damping representation is proven, provided they satisfy certain conditions. A simple method for determining the range of asymptotic stability is obtained as a special case.
