WAVE TORSIONAL MOMENTS IN SHIPS WITH LARGE HATCH OPENINGS

The aim of this paper is to discuss in some detail the validity of different formulae adopted by the Classification Societies for expression of the torsional wave loads. An equivalent wave approach has been used so that wave heights and shear and torque transfer functions obtained from direct calculations can be compared with those given by the above formulae. Wave heights have been found to be in fairly good agreement, while significant differences are observed for horizontal shear. The importance of correct use of the joint probability distribution of wave heights and periods is emphasised.
