THE EDMONTON STUDY - THE IMPACT OF A DRINKING DRIVING CAMPAIGN
The report describes a pilot project to measure objectively the effect of a planned drinking - driving campaign in the Canadian city of Edmonton. A second city, Calgary, was used as a control and subjected to only its normal traffic safety publicity. Part 1 describes the public information campaign which took the form of display posters, outdoor hoardings and the distribution of posters and pamphlets. In addition, press features and radio and television messages were used. Other examples of the activities and materials used are also given. Part 2 of the report deals with the evaluation of the effect of the campaign. This appraisal took the form of a 'before and after' study in which drivers were randomly selected and interviewed and blood - alcohol levels measured in the period immediately before and soon after the month-long campaign. The results obtained are presented and discussed. It was concluded that the Edmonton campaign was effective in reducing the number of impaired drivers on the road and that both campaigns were successful in increasing the level of knowledge and in changing drivers attitudes and behaviour in relation to drinking - driving. /TRRL/
