BENEFITS OF MAIN ENGINE GENERATORS
In this extract from a paper by M. Welle, of Sulzer Brothers Ltd, energy-saving measures and the advantages of driving electric generators off the main engine are first briefly discussed. Sulzer's power take-off, which is available as an option on the company's RTA engines and is driven by step-up gearing from the camshaft drive, is then discussed in more detail, together with various possible types of installation with c.p. and f.p. propellers. F.p. installations can have a frequency converter or the generator can be driven at constant speed through a variable-ratio transmission. Several advantages of the Sulzer PTO are listed; the only limiting factor is the power available through the camshaft drive; the relatively high investment is quickly offset by fuel savings. An economic comparison between this PTO <used with a thyristor converter> and an auxiliary engine for generator drive is discussed. The possibilities of retrofitting the PTO on RTA engines are briefly considered.
