TOTAL OPERATING COSTS OF MAIN PROPULSION DIESEL ENGINES - A COMPARISON OF THREE LEADING MAKES OF DIESEL ENGINES

The Author, of Neptune Orient Lines Ltd, has calculated and compared the annual running costs, apart from fuel costs, of three principal makes of Diesel engine, namely, B & W exhaust poppet type, Sulzer RND type, and Pielstick PC2 type. The comparison, which is set out in a table, shows the following items: lubricants, maintenance <labour>, and spare parts replacement and renovation. The following assumptions were made:- 10000 ps engine: slow speed - 6 cylinders, 2 turbo- chargers, medium speed - 14 cylinders, 2 turbochargers; Year built: 1973; Sea days: 250 per year; Maintenance all done by crew: US dollars 8 per man-hour; Prices based on 1982. The table shows the following total costs <in dollars>: B & W 126,480; Sulzer 117,251; Pielstick 129,289. The figures given are based on experience in running a fleet of about 20 - 30 ships over the past 10 years.
