CHEMICAL CARRIERS: SOPHISTICATED SHIPS

In this article <an excerpt from Exxon Marine, No. 1/2 of 1983>, chemical carriers and their cargoes are reviewed from, mainly, the operator's viewpoint. Aspects considered include: parcel tankers and their multiple cargoes; the wide variety of chemical-tanker cargoes; tank coatings, and stainless steel <clad or bonded> tanks; pumps and piping systems; tank cleaning and inspection; avoidance and cargo contamination; and pollution prevention. It is mentioned that the main difference between the fourth generation of chemical tankers now building and previous vessels of this type is the larger size <35,000 to 58,000 dwt> of the new ships.
