INSTRUMENTATION OF TOWING OPERATIONS WITH REGARD TO FATIGUE MINIMISATION
Transportation of very large offshore oil production platforms by marine barges on trans-ocean tows is now commonplace. These steel structures weigh from several hundreds to in excess of twenty thousand tonnes and have values measured in tens of millions of dollars. This paper addresses the particular problem of controlling the fatigue damage done to such structures on long ocean tows. Instrumentation, data processing/analysis and other techniques for on-board fatigue monitoring are described.
