REMARKS ON THE STEERING EFFECT OF PROPELLERS

The paper briefly reviews theoretical and experimental studies of the forces acting on the propeller, rudder and hull of a ship during turning and stopping manoeuvres. From the results of work on both single and twin-screw ships, two main recommendations are made for safe shiphandling during manoeuvres, i.e. - Single-screw ships should have a right-turning fixed propeller or a left-turning controllable pitch <CP> propeller. - Twin screw ships should have an outward turning fixed propeller or an inward turning CP propeller.
