THE INFLOW-COMPENSATION NOZZLE -- A NEW DEVICE FOR IMPROVING PROPELLER WORKING CONDITIONS

After mentioning that the inflow-compensation nozzle <the "Zustromausgleichsduse"> has, almost unnoticed, made its appearance as a new and simple means of improving the propulsion of all types of merchant ship, the Author describes and discusses this patented device, which has been developed by Professor Schneekluth, of the RWTH, Aachen. The nozzle, which has reached the stage where it is ready for practical application, is much smaller than the propeller that it serves, and is fixed ahead of the propeller and above the propeller axis, with its outlet directed towards the uppermost propeller blades; the port and starboard halves of the nozzle can be set at their respective optimum angles. The nozzle provides additional mass-flow and improves the uniformity of the inflow to the propeller. Some advantages over other devices in this field are mentioned. Model tests have indicated that the nozzle should result in a power saving of the order of 6 to 11% and that this applies to a variety of hull forms and fullnesses. Its simple design, ease of fitting, and small size should ensure a low cost, both for new ships and for retrofitting.
