CHANGES IN DESIGN, EQUIPMENT AND MANNING OF TRACTOR TUGS DURING THE LAST 15 YEARS

Tractor tugs which have their propulsion units, either cycloidal or Z-drive propellers installed forward have increased in popularity among tug-owners following the success of the first Rudderpropeller Tractor Tug Janus in 1967. Further experience with the tugs Bugsier I, Johanna and Hans has encouraged owners in Bremen and Hamburg to develop a specification for a three-man tug. The paper outlines the changes in design and layout required.
