CONGESTED "GIVE-WAY" JUNCTIONS
When the traffic passing a junction with a "give-way" sign becomes congested, drivers on the main road often allow vehicles to turn in front of them into and out of the side road. This paper describes some field observations to determine what proportion of main road drivers do let side road vehicles turn in front of them, under various conditions. Two congested sites have been observed, and the sequence in which vehicles passed through the junction was recorded by a simple pencil-and paper method. The passage of over 3000 main road vehicles was observed; 32% allowed a side road vehicle to turn in front of them. It was found that a main road driver is more likely to allow vehicles to turn in front of him if: the flow (and hence the speed) on the main road is low because of the congestion downstream, there are several queues of vehicles waiting to turn in different directions, the vehicle is a heavy goods vehicle or a bus, and apparently, fewer than usual of the vehicles in front have stopped to allow turning. It is shown how these results could, if generally applicable, be used to predict delays to vehicles in a congested road with one or more "give-way" type junctions, for a given flow at the downstream end. /TRRL/
