DOME'S SECOND PROTOTYPE ICEBREAKER

As a further step in their plans to exploit oil and gas resources in the Canadian High Arctic, Dome Petroleum of Calgary, Alberta, have taken delivery of the 5800-t displacement Arctic Class 3 icebreaking supply ship Robert Le Meur from Burrard Yarrows Corp. at Vancouver and Victoria. Together with the similar-sized Canmar Kigoriak which was delivered some two years ago, the new ship will support Dome's offshore oil and gas exploitation in the Beaufort Sea. Like the earlier vessel, the Robert Le Meur is also a scaled prototype for the large Class 7 to 10 icebreaking LNG carriers and oil tankers expected in forthcoming Arctic exploitation. Propulsion is by two 12-cylinder MaK M453 medium-speed diesels. Immediately aft of the superstructure there are nine bulk storage tanks, totalling 1200 tons, for drilling mud and cement. The remainder of the main deck aft will be used for whatever other cargo is to be carried. Main particulars of Robert Le Meur:- Length, o.a. 82.5m, b.p. 77m; Breadth mld 18m; Depth 7.5m; Draught, operating 5m, summer 5.67m; Corresponding displacement 5853 tonnes; Corresponding deadweight 2690 tonnes; Installed power 7208 kW; Bollard pull 1180 kN; Trial speed 13.5 knots; crew 14.
