WARTSILA'S CRUISE LINERS OF THE FUTURE
After first mentioning and briefly describing some of the more recent cruise liners built by Wartsila's Helsinki Shipyard, in particular the Song of America completed in November 1982 <see Abs. No. 59724, June 1983> and the new ship, Royal Princess, for P & O due for delivery in 1984, this article provides advanced information on some of the designs intended to satisfy the requirements for the cruise market well into the 1990s. A significant feature of these new ships is the adoption of an inset superstructure, permitting a spacious promenade deck on each side of the ship and a substantial increase in the number of high revenue-earning exterior cabins. To date all Wartsila's designs have been based on monohulls, but consideration is now being given to the development of a 1,500-passenger SWATH-type ship which will provide a considerable increase in deck area together with a number of economic advantages. The principal particulars of the SWATH ship, together with a description of the philosophy behind its design, are given. Finally, some information is included on two small yacht-type cruise vessels being built by Wartsila for a Norwegian company.
