TYRE EXAMINATION METHODS FOR POLICE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATORS

The booklet comprehensively describes and illustrates tyre defects diagnosing possible causes from an examination of the damage. Examination methods are discussed, advice given on marking and recording the damage, and when the forensic laboratory should be consulted. The effect on tread pattern of common faults such as those caused by under or over inflation, or faulty steering and suspension are illustrated. The booklet gives some suggestions to assist in the difficult task of determining whether a fault or an accident caused the damage, this is often the difficulty with cuts. All types of puncture are dealt with, and the importance of correct fitting and repair techniques is emphasised. Differences between skidding and aquaplaning are mentioned. The effect of tyre deflation on vehicle behaviour is briefly described; often little warning or indication is given until a driver loses control. A table of speed markings for car tyres is given in Appendix I, Appendix II lists theoretical replacements of radial and cross ply tyres and suitable tyre sections for various sizes are given in Appendix III. /TRRL/
