TWO 20-M FISHERY PROTECTION CRAFT FOR SCOTTISH WATERS (MORVEN AND MOIDART)

Two unarmed long-range fishery protection and surveillance craft, FPV Morven and FPV Moidart, have been completed for the Dept. of Agriculture & Fisheries for Scotland. They are designed for patrolling inshore waters and to be capable of remaining at sea for a week in all weathers. Built by Cheverton Workboats <of Cowes> to a design by Murray, Cormack & Associates, each boat has a North Cape 65 heavy-duty glass-fibre hull, a round-bilge semi-displacement type <Cheverton moulds these hulls, and in this instance also won the fitting-out contract>. Three 510-bhp Allison GM 8V92T1 main engines drive triple c.p. fully-feathering screws through 2.4:1 gearboxes in an arrangement that gives these vessels a speed of about 24 knots at full power, 17 knots on outer engines only, and up to 11 knots on the centre engine only. The article includes deck plans. Principal particulars are:- length 19.8m o.a., 17.9m waterline; beam 5.5m hull, 5.77m o.a.; draught 1.63m; displacement 37 tonnes light, 44 t loaded; individual cabins for complement of 5. The article also includes general-arrangement drawings and a brief description of a Cheverton design for a 20-m military patrol boat, based on the same hull form. It is broadly similar to the two FPVs, but has a 20mm cannon forward, a streamlined aluminium superstructure, and accommodation for a total of 12 or 13. Three 625-shp MAN engines would give speeds similar to those of the FPVs, and a range of 430 miles at 22 knots; conventional twin-engine arrangement is also possible.
