"FREEWAY": A FLEXIBLE RORO FROM IHI

After brief information on previous series of standard ships from IHI <Freedom, Fortune and Friendship vessels> and on the activities of Trans-Consultants, the Swedish consultants with whom IHI collaborated in the Design of Freeway, a new series of roll-on/ roll-off vessels suitable for Third World requirements, the article gives a short description of the Freeway 900 version <there are 3 other versions - the Freeway 1500, 1300 and 1100 - all larger than the 900>. Features of the Freeway 900 include: a 43m long quarter ramp which can take a gross transit load of up to 420t and has automatic adjustment; fixed internal ramps; four cargo decks <including the weather deck and tank top>; container sockets allowing both longitudinal and transverse stowage. Optional items include: 700-kW bow and stern thrusters; facilities for up to 50 refrigerated containers; deck crane; hoistable car-deck; and a watertight bulkhead door. The article includes a cutaway and a profile drawing showing the ship's layout. Principal particulars of the Freeway 900 are: Length 150.8m o.a., 135.8m b.p.; Breadth, mld. 28m; Moulded depth 17.7m; Design draught 8.7m <12,200 dwt>, scantling draught 9.5m <14,800 dwt>; TEU capacity 1022; total cargo area 7650 sqm; Total lane length 2370m; IHI-Sulzer 6RTA58 main engine, csr 7610 kW at 118.8 rpm; Service speed 17.1 knots; Fuel consumption 32.2 t/24hr at 17.1 knots <fuel viscosity 380 cSt at 50 degC>; Range 15,000 n. miles; Complement 34.
