NOISE PROTECTION ON THE NYNAES ROAD: ATTITUDINAL SURVEY

In 1974 a 1100 M long noise screen was constructed between the Nynaes road and a housing area close to the road. The noise screen is 2 M high and consists of a wooden screen and an earth wall, alternately. An attidudinal survey was performed among those inhabitants of this area who lived in the two rows of houses closest to the road. 25% of householders find themselves disturbed indoors, and 33% outdoors, by traffic noise from the road today, compared to 58%, and 72%, respectively, before the construction of the noise screen. Noise measurements show that the equivalent sound level, indoors, has been reduced from 44 db(a) to 36 db(a), and outdoors from 70 db(a) to 60 db(a). 19% regard themselves as disturbed by air pollution outdoors compared to 49% before. 38% find advantageous and 27% disadvantageous that the view of the road has been reduced. 11% feel that the noise screen causes a feeling of confinement. 70% are satisfied or rather satisfied with the design and appearance of the noise screen, a somewhat higher percentage being more satisfied with the earth wall than with the wooden screen. 74% are of the opinion that the housing environment has improved and 2% that it has deteriorated. /TRRL/
