ITALCANTIERI BUILDING COAL-FIRED BULK CARRIERS T.N.T. CARPENTARIA AND T.N.T. CAPRICORNIA

The two 75,500-dwt bulk carriers being built by Italcantieri for TNT Bulkships' Australian trade in bauxite and other cargoes are described with particular reference to their coal-fired propulsion system, and reasons are given for some relevant design decisions. The coal <max. size 38mm> is stored in a 3,400 cum "structural tank" forward of the engine room, & is transferred practically continuously to the ready-use hopper by a dense-phase air-operated system. The ash-handling system allows dry handling, with humidification before discharge overboard. There is a single boiler, with balanced draught & two-stage superheater; the coal is fired on a continuous-discharge spreader stoker. The 19,000 shp <mcr> main turbine plant, built under G.E. licence, has one HP and one LP turbine, with articulated reduction gear; propeller speed is 85 rpm. There is a 1700 kW turbogenerator and a 1700 kW Diesel set; the latter can provide the power required by the take-home motor. The boiler can be oil-fired to give half its full output for emergency and other purposes. Each ship has four holds and eight hatches, fitted with side-rolling panels. Principal particulars include: Length, o.a. 255m <max.>; Breadth, moulded 35.3m; Depth, mld. 19m; Draught, design 12.2m, with 75,500 t <approx.> corresponding dwt; cargo capacity <100% full> 67,800 cum; Trials speed, fully laden in 32m water depth at mcr 15.8 knots; Cruising range, at 15 knots 4000 miles <approx.>; Calculated fuel rate, at 17,000 shp 488 g/hphr; Classification LR, with UMS notation. The articel includes a profile drawings of the ship, and a drawing of the engine room, boiler and bunker layout.
