THE "MANAV" INTEGRATED NAVIGATION SYSTEM

The MANAV concept was initiated in 1967 as a joint Esso/Ministry of Technology <MINTECH> study with the aim of developing an integrated navigation system to ensure the safe operation of the VLCCs which were then coming into service. The <then> Decca Company's involvement began in 1971 with the requirement to bring together in one console the coordinated information from a variety of sources necessary for the safe and efficient passage making of the ship. The paper presents a summary of fourteen years' progress on the MANAV project resulting in the present Racal-Decca System of which an outline is given. The results of a sea trials evaluation of a prototype MANAV installation are analysed and the further development of the system is indicated.
