ENERGY, TRANSPORTS, FUTURE - FACTS FROM CURRENT INVESTIGATIONS - MARCH 1975
ENERGI, TRANSPORTER, FRAMTID - FAKTA FRAAN AKTUELLA UTREDNINGAR - MARS 1975
The findings of investigations concerning "Energy, Transport and the Future" are as follows: 1. In countries of Sweden's size, energy must be available for transport purposes, otherwise there may be economic regression or drastic concentration of population and business. 2. The significance of transport is much greater than appears from its share of GNP. 3. Transport accounts for 13% of total energy balance and 18% of oil consumption. 4. There is little chance in the near future of saving energy in the transport sector. For passenger transport, 5. There remains a dependence on the car outside towns. 6. Public transport must be developed in towns. 7. Most car journeys are journey to work and business journeys. 8. If all car journeys over 50 km were effected by rail, there would be a 0.8% energy saving. For goods transport, 9. The greatest chance of energy savings lies in better utilisation of the means of transport. 10. From the energy standpoint, the larger the lorry, the more efficient it is. 11. If all lorry transport was to cease, there would be a 0.3% energy saving. This could only be achieved by drastic measures. 12. For all hauls under 200 km, there is little interchangeability between rail and lorry transport. 13. Investment is essential if the railway system is to attract traffic from other modes. /TRRL/
