NATURAL GAS: ENGINE FUEL OF THE FUTURE?
The Research Institute for Road Vehicles (TNO) has carried out research on the applications of the fuel liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and recently also on the use of natural gas. An advantage of natural gas is that it has favorable emission characteristics in comparison with many fuels. It can be used as an engine fuel in two forms: (1) Compressed natural gas (CNG), which is stored under very high pressure; (2) Liquefied natural gas (LNG), in which storage takes place at low pressure and under cryogenic conditions (approx - 170 degrees C). The layout of a LNG system and the measures to be taken for conversion of diesel and petrol engines for use with LNG are outlined in the leaflet. The Research Institute will give further information on request. /TRRL/
