AN ANALYSIS OF HUMAN VARIABILITY IN MECHANICAL INSPECTION
This report presents the procedures employed and the detailed results obtained in a study of the variability of measurements of nine holes in a given test plate. The measurements were performed by 21 inspectors using standard open setup equipment (Cadillac Gage Company and Weber Gage Division equipment), and Potter Instrument Coordinate Measuring Machine, and three Moore Universal Measuring Machines. The results provide a basis for predicting accuracy or likely errors for future measurements made under similar conditions. The major sources of variability, in order of magnitude, were found to be human errors in the calculations attending open setup measurements, differences among individual inspectors, different types of equipment, differences in hole characteristics and variations in the accessories and techniques employed. /Author/
