ARTICULATED VEHICLE ACCIDENTS IN ONTARIO IN 1972 - AN ANALYSIS OF POLICE ACCIDENT DATA

This report presents an analysis of reportable accidents involving articulated commercial vehicles which occurred in Ontario in 1972. An articulated vehicle accident subfile was extracted from the Extended Ontario File of police accident reports. The analysis provides an breakdown by 3 types of articulated vehicles - semi, semi plus pup and straight truck plus trailer. Comparisons are made which show that articulated vehicle accidents are more severe than average, in terms of fatalities, injuries and property damage, but represent less than 3% o f all accidents. Accidents involving double-articulated vehicles (pup trailers) are more severe than those involving single-articulated vehicles. Straight truck-trailer accidents are the least severe of the 3 types investigated, and involve smaller, more various trucks and trailers. Limitations of the accident data and suggestions for further investigations are discussed.
