PROTOTYPE FABRICATION AND TESTING OF IMPROVED SYSTEM
Based upon dynamic analysis of restraint systems in crash situations, it became obvious that a rigid restraint system was essential if prohibitive "dynamic overshoot" was to be eliminated. A rigid restraint system was designed on the basis of the design parameters which were indicated by analysis to be of primary importance. An improved restraint system was fabricated and subjected to a series of dynamic tests on the Naval Air Development Center's Linear Horiztonal Accelerator. Input pulse parameters were based upon the recommendations published in the "Crash Survival Design Guide" USAAVLABS Technical Report 71-22 for crewmens seats. Results of the test show that the improved (rigid) restraint system offers a definite advantage in crew member survivability. Peak acceleration and associated severity index in the head area showed an improvement of almost 2 to 1 over that experienced with the conventional, flexible restraint system.
