NEW MODELING AND SIMULATION METHODS FOR THE EVALUATION OF INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SYSTEMS DESIGN
Designs for advanced intelligent transport systems (ITS) require evaluation using more complete, realistic, consistent, and cost- effective system-level simulation and modeling than has been required in the past. Simulations operating on larger scales and at more detailed levels are needed. These new requirements often exceed the capabilities of traditional transport system evaluation technologies. Two simulation tools based on different distributed computing paradigms are described. One is a client server-based decision support system for evaluating alternative Automated Highway System (Intelligent Vehicle) concepts. The second is a general IVHS simulation testbed that applies distributed interactive simulation (DIS) technologies developed by the U.S. defense establishment.
