THE VEHICLE COLLISION ENVIRONMENT
Brief reviews are presented of accident data, vehicle collision dynamics and corresponding occupant dynamics. The limitations of staged crashes, using instrumented vehicles and anthropometric test devices, to obtain engineering measures of vehicle and occupant responses, are discussed. The new development of processing data transmitted from the accident scene via a mobile telephone is described. Encouraging results have been obtained with this investigation aid and these results are presented. Vehicle collision dynamics have not been fully assessed in the field anthropometric dummies are the most widely used device for investigating occupant dynamics in collisions but they do not have a "one to one" relationship with living humans. The current state of knowledge of the following topics related to structural design goals is given: frontal crush properties, side impacts, rollover protection and rear collision protection.
