HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY BRACES FOR BUSINESS UNDER METRIC SYSTEM
This article is the first in a monthly series that will examine the highway construction industry's reaction to the Federal Government's mandated changeover to the metric system. The Federal Government initiated the transition to the metric system 4 years ago and believes that adoption of the metric system is essential for the Nation's economic well-being. September 30, 1996 is the deadline for companies that do business with the Federal Government to make the switch in their operations or forfeit any future contracts with the government. Proponents both for and against metrication will be highlighted in the series, which will include reaction from contractors, consulting engineers, governmental agencies, the Congress, and suppliers. A sidebar notes that a bridge in Nebraska is the first to use metric girders.
