THE COMPACTIBILITY OF ASPHALT MIXTURES WITH MODIFIED BITUMENS

DE VERDICHTBAARHEID VAN ASFALTMENGSELS MET GEMODIFICEERDE BITUMINA

In practice asphalt mixtures with elastomer modified and plastomer modified bitumens show a different compaction behaviour. Research was carried out into this difference in relation to the type of binder by compacting test mixes in a gyratory compactor. Besides a reference mix with bitumen 80/100, asphalt mixes with the following five binders were used: 1) Esso Flexxipave 101; 2) Esso Flexxipave 503; 3) Linear SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene copolymer) in 80/100; 4) Linear SBS in 320 pen.; 5) Rubberised asphalt. The investigations of the shear stresses during compaction with the gyratory compactor showed a high correlation with the performance of the asphalt mixes in practice. Elastomers keep reacting elasticly in the temperature area investigated and show a clearly higher shear stress level than the reference bitumen 80/100. Plastomers lose their elastic properties above 60 to 80 degrees Celsius and then behave viscously. Preliminary investigation of the shear stresses with a gyratory compactor at the compaction temperature from daily practice can predict problems and help to prevent them.
