NON-MOTORIZED TRANSPORT IN RURAL AND URBAN GHANA
A pilot project funded by the World Bank to promote the use of intermediate means of transport (IMTs) among the rural poor in Ghana is providing valuable lessons for similar efforts elsewhere. The project was launched in 1988 in response to growing awareness of the 'missing middle' in African transportation systems; between cars and trucks on the one hand, and headloading on the other. The pilot project focused primarily on the introduction of two new IMTs into the project areas: the cycle trailer and the farm vehicle. A further project being considered by the government and the Bank promises other equally important lessons in the promotion of non-motorized transport in an urban setting.
