THE PRESSURE OF EXTERNAL FORCES

This article is a brief review of the options considered by local authority highways departments following compulsory competitive tendering (CCT) for work, except for trunk road agency work. Some Highways Departments have been privatised (Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire County Councils, and the London Boroughs of Bromley, Ealing and Westminster), and there are others under consideration. It is thought that transfer to the private sector may lead to significant job losses.
