CONSTRUCTION OF THE 'PASSANTE FERROVIAVIO' LINK IN MILAN, ITALY, LOTS 3P, 5P AND 6P: EXCAVATION BY LARGE EARTH PRESSURE BALANCED SHIELD WITH CHEMICAL FOAM INJECTION
This paper describes the construction of a 2,000 m long twin tube railway tunnel. The internal diameter of the tunnel is 6.90 m. It is being excavated through alluvial ground, with low overburden. An 8.0 m diameter Earth Pressure Balanced tunnelling machine is used, with chemical foam injection. Concrete is extruded behind the segment. Details are provided of: a) the route of the tunnel; b) the excavation method; c) the earth pressure balanced shield machine design; d) the tunnel lining, including the extruded concrete process; and e) the foam injection method. The performance of the excavation process is described briefly. The main difficulties encountered during the excavation, and the adjustments made to equipment to overcome these are also presented. For the covering abstract see IRRD 866966.
