CHANNEL TUNNEL: FRENCH UNDERSEA CROSSOVER DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION
This paper covers the whole of the reasons which led to the design of the French crossover, including various types of constraints: construction programme, boring schedule and boring methods of the running tunnels, geometrical, geotechnical and structural. After describing the geotechnical and structural aspects, the design methods and the construction techniques, it presents the outstanding facts of the construction from the point of view of a back-analysis of the design of the structure. Eventually, the knowledge gained from this realization is emphasised. Finally, it makes some comparisons between the French and the U.K. crossovers. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 866966.
