INTEGRATING PUBLIC CONCERNS INTO TECHNICAL DECISIONS
The mere thought of involving the public in technical decisionmaking is not pleasant; however, responding to public concerns often wins allies and promotes public acceptance of proposed projects. This article states that public involvement can take three forms: collegial, consultative, or consensual. Public involvement can enhance a project's credibility and offer the largest number of stakeholders an opportunity to influence the project sponsor. The article identifies ways in which project sponsors can involve the public, offers information on when and if public involvement is appropriate, and lists the principles of public involvement.
